Frank Puletua has been a first grade footballer with the Rabbitohs' for two years. They discovered he could draw at a dinner put on by Russell Crowe at the end of a pre-season training camp in Coffs Harbour. He picked up some posters that were being distributed and began drawing caricatures of the team mates sitting near-by. Since then Puletua has been commissioned to draw posters of the team and pictures of major events for the club.
When comissioned to draw his team, in "Puletua's Perspective," Puletua continued using Derwent pencils he had used in his previous major work, a portrait of his girlfriend Jane Lancaster, presented at her 21st. This was second in size only to his HSC work, a collage portrait of Michael Jordan. The Jordan portrait toured with Art Express for three years, from 1996 until the end of 1998.
Puletua has always been an artist. He was considered to be the artist of the family where his younger brother was though of as the footballer. Since then the family stereotypes have been revised and Frank Puletua has also proven himself to be of first grade mettle.
Puletua came to Australia with his family in 1992 and was a part of the school team at John Paul II Senior High School. He observes that almost all of the players in his school team had the talent to go onto first grade Rugby League. A couple of them made pro-active decisions not to pursue football and opted for careers in law instead. There never seems to have been a choice for Puletua, it was always football with art going on when it could. He began playing the first grade game with his home team, Penrith, when he was 19 and moved to the Rabbitohs when his contract finished.
Puletua is inspired by comics, especially "Mad" comic and is moving towards a more animated feel in his caricatures. In his drawing of the Red and Green Ball Puletua starting mixing mediums, working up penciled in areas with paint, after roughing out the composition. He jig-saws components together, letting the bright white paper shine through faces and blotting it out in opaque backdrops.
Puletua's portrait of Snoop Doggy Dogg, in a "more serious" mode, uses space and contour lines to define the lit form brilliantly.
As with all athletes at the top I'm impressed with Puletua's dedication. He has an inspiring focus. The Rugby League Clubs have very wisely started channelling this source of inspiration into country schools with 2 - 3 players being nominated to visit particular schools at any one time. The players go with the aim of addressing safety issues for the Motor Accidents Authority but inevitably field questions about their game.
Due to the decision to focus exclusively on the quality of his football, Puletua's artwork is about "sphere of influence", and is well meaning as is his nature. He draws on request and rarely has the time to pursue the craft outside professional duties. He is open to art as a second career as he figures he only has approximately 6 - 7 years left as a professional athlete. He has not ruled out graphic design but is attracted to illustration. |
