BRAD MUNRO - Painting
HUI SELWOOD - Sculpture

Defiance

25 July - 18 August, 2001
Opening Wednesday 25 July, 6-8pm

Upcoming artists Brad Munro and Hui Selwood will be exhibiting at Defiance during the month of late July to mid August.

The recent work by sculptor, Hui Selwood, is a continuation of processes the artist has been engaged with since graduating from the National Art School in 1997. The combination of manipulated and found materials to create abstracted forms is an aspect of Selwood's abstract style.

Steel, combined with a variation of surface treatments are the main components in Selwood's sculpture. As Selwood states, 'Using colour on separate elements enhances the surfaces and the spatial dynamics.' In recent years, Selwood, (normally based in Sydney), travelled and spent several months living in Europe over a year ago. That period, and time spent living in various parts of Australia have enhanced Selwood's response to his immediate environments. Selwood will feature later this year in Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi.

'The inspiration for this body of work derives from the experience and perception I have developed from my environment - both that of the natural and urban landscapes.' - Hui Selwood, 2001

Brad Munro's recent works derive from the colours and forms of nature. The explosion of colour on the canvas through the effect of layering and crosshatching confronts the viewer, where large canvases measure up to 3 x 4 metres. Munro pushes the boundaries of painting and himself, while challenging the viewer with abstracted forms.

'I have taken my colours and shapes from nature, a sense of beauty that we all have in common and painted them in a style which I have arrived at by taking the essence of several genres and colliding them together on the picture plane. In my studio I am completely free, my paintings appear to have their own life, and this comes about from the physical process of painting.' - Brad Munro, 2001

A graduate from the National Art School, Sydney, Munro is represented in many private collections throughout Australia, United Kingdom and the USA. Consistently exhibiting since 1995, Munro's work can also be found in the Arthur Boyd Foundation and Casula Powerhouse.
