Five artists get close and personal to the concept �queer beyond the immediate representations of lesbian and gay sexuality. Featuring the work of PK Khut, Brenda MacDuff, Nairn Scott, Kaye Shumack and Cassy Sutherland.
In PK Khut�s work silence is an important component. In combination with the other materials, it brings out certain qualities that PK is interested in, luminosity, solitude and the suspension of time. For example, the soundtrack of the billiard balls counters this pathos. PK has always found pool a very sexy game, and the sound particularly erotic. Pool to PK has something in common with the steely silence of the sex club or public beat. Something game like, anticipation filled and fundamentally predatory.
Brenda MacDuff looks at the life cycle of slime moulds as a metaphorical social model for the queer community in Sydney. Communications, connections, aggregations and physical exchanges between women will be illustrated in cast wax forms depicting life cycle of a slime mould.
Nairn Scott�s grey areas, loads queer places somewhere outside the rigidity of a world that seems only to see in black and white, has been a recurring theme with in Nairn�s work. Using photographic practices and theories as points of departure, the Shadow and its Reflection are metaphors for new work that looks at identity and itself.
Kaye Shumack�s photographs record simple moments of a Sydney life. The actors play themselves in relation to the stage of urban Sydney � luscious, queer and compelling.
Cassy Sutherland has attended the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade since she was a child taken by her mother. Cassy�s photographic and installation work portrays her ever longing desire to be a drag queen after years of inspiration from previous parades.
