Tenants of Blackwattle Studios remember Leon Fink standing up at a Tenants' Association meeting and personally promising that they would get 6 months notice to vacate.
A letter from Blackwattle Manager, Clare Ivers, dated 4th August, said that the tenants would be guaranteed 4 months notice. Again at the end of December management undertook to give a minimum of 4 months notice.
In a letter dated 19th November management informed the tenants that Council approved the development and that in the event of an extension, vacation would not be required until at least 1 June 2000.
On 25th February notice was given requiring the premises to be vacated by the end of June 2000 but we "prefer you to leave by the end of May" 2000.
At one point the Blackwattle Tenants' Association offered to buy the site from Fink. His response, that he was not interested in selling it to them, was not in writing. As reported in the Fin. Review, Fink recently sold the site for 18.3 mill. to another developer.
What's happening:
The Tenants' Association met on the 13 March to discuss a rumour that the vacation date was to be brought forward to the end of April. Mr. Fink was worried that the tenants would not be out before June because his contract of sale requires vacant possession. As a result of that meeting the tenants are negotiating with Mr. Fink to vacate 10 days before the end of June.
Clearance sales have been planned for 2 consecutive weekends mid-April though the dates have not been finalized. Everyone's too busy trying to find somewhere else to work. Some people are looking with a view to keeping the community together as a couple of warehouses are becoming available in the area.
If there are any wealthy property owners who have appropriate space for 100 tenants to move in immediately, please let them know on 02 9566 4192.
