Having always been interested in art theory and practice, I went to art school to explore techniques and to improve my ability. My choice of medium was, and still is, painting because I like it, but I mainly concentrated on using pastel, pen, ink and charcoal. I also chose etching for its precision and drafting accuracy.

I have worked in the arts-related fields of teaching, graphic art, scenic artist for film, and as an illustrator for magazines, greeting cards, and childrens books. I have taught drawing and cartooning in evening colleges, TAFE, high school and privately. I have also worked in galleries and auction houses to understand the art marketplace. I return to the rudiments of my training with a better understanding of the art world and a keen desire to explore the basic elements of drawing and painting with a different perspective.

When I taught drawing I devised observational exercises using the still life in an attempt to enable students to perceive the object in a different way. Now I explore and build on these concepts in my own way.

I enjoy painting in the outdoors, en plein air, whenever I can and I paint in oils loosely to create an impression of nature and the moment.  This sometimes has the appearance of being like a watercolour, light and airy. Sometimes the work is complete in itself but sometimes I work on it further back in the studio or use the originals as studies for further investigation.

At the moment, painting is a private thing for me and it is difficult to consider myself as an exhibiting artist although I am adding to my body of work as much as I can. I choose my subject matter for my paintings from portraiture, still life, landscape and the figure.

I do commissions and at the moment am working on a figure and portrait series.
